DVAS captured on AUX TV New Year's Eve

Canada's newest national broadcast music television station AUX.TV caught up with DVAS prior to their sold out NYE show at The Garrison in Toronto. You can watch the interview online on the AUX.TV Guide to New Music page. Find out how the DVAS name originated, how the boys make magic at their live shows, as well as their plans for world domination and haircuts in 2010!

As for New Year's Eve, if you missed the Shit La Merde party, you probably won't hear many people talking about it because everyone there was way too crunk to comment!! DVAS had the crowd hot and bothered both on the dance floor and jumping on the stage as they rang in the New Year with a balloon/confetti-soaked set of DVAS high energy trance-dance-pop musique.

Next up for DVAS, the release of their new single "Society" coming very soon. Stay Tuned for news on this!!

Canada Reads 2010, the annual battle of the books involves celebrity guests defending their choice of novel. They debate their choices every day for a week on CBC Radio One before choosing a single book they believe Canadians would enjoy reading. Books are gradually voted off until a winner is declared.

His Lordship, Edmonton Poet Laureate, Rollie Pemberton better known to us as Cadence Weapon will be defending Douglas Coupland’s book “Generation X”.  Pemberton faces off against CityTV Vancouver's Evening News Anchor Simi Sara who is defending "Good to a Fault" by Marina Endicott, Esteemed Author/Literary Critic/Director/Publisher Michel Vézina, who is defending "Nikolski" by Nicolas Dickner, translated by Lazer Lederhendler, Founder and Executive Director of War Child Canada Samantha Nutt, who is defending "The Jade Peony" by Wayson Choy, and two-time Olympian and eight-time Canadian champion Track and Field Athlete Perdita Felicien, who is defending "Fall on Your Knees" by Ann-Marie MacDonald.

Cadence selected "Generation X" because he feels it is representative of him, his friends and the transient nature of youth, “I knew people who’d done some of those things and felt the buzzwords were still relevant. The book is just very real.” Says Pemberton “It’s the one I instantly thought of if I could represent a book, and a book I felt was thematically similar to things I’ve written and believe”

Although they’d never met before, Cadence Weapon and Vancouver Author Douglas Coupland developed instant rapport, often turning questions asked by media into one-on-one conversations. Brian Coulton - Metro Canada

You can catch the Canada Reads 2010 debates March 8 to 12th on CBC Radio One, moderated by Radio 1 Host of Q - Jian Ghomeshi.

Divan Orange was at capacity with a large crowd trying to get in to see Toronto’s DVAS…The band makes us think a little bit of Journey’s More Than A Feeling re-imagined as house music, and that formula works way better than it should. The whole Phil-Collins-on-ecstasy vibe is silly enough to be fun, and catchy enough to stick in your head for the rest of the night. The club was so steamy and sweaty that our video camera kept fogging up” – NOW Magazine

One of my favourite electronic bands in Toronto” - BlogTO

It started in Edmonton, spread to Toronto & Montreal and begins to circle the world – an infectious musical exploration that’s filtered into the ears of London Hipsters, Parisian electro-kids right through to New York Fashionistas. The creators of this musical blitzkrieg are DVAS, a pair of electro-dance innovators who have busted-beats from their hometown in Edmonton alongside label mate Cadence Weapon and local pals Faunts and Shout Out Out Out Out.

Dietzche V. and the Abominable Snowman’s French touch will take you on a dangerous and sexy journey of disco, funk, and soul with their bounce-heavy set of emotional and summer-y electro house anthems. They may share some attributes with the space sounds of Daft Punk and pop legacy of Hall And Oates, but DVAS bring intense originality and innovation to up
the ante on dance floor pop jams.

DVAS have released three internet-only mixtapes, a slew of remixes including a lethal-mash of Cadence Weapon’s “Getting Dumb”, available exclusively on Cadence Weapon’s iTunes release of the Separation Anxiety EP, and have brand new track “Inner Sanctum” featured on the 2009 France based blog turned label, Valerie; “Valerie And Friends”

As 2009 draws to a close for most of us, it is only the beginning for DVAS. They made their Upper Class live debut at Pop Montreal for ‘Le UC Throwdown 09’ Showcase at Divan Orange, Saturday October 3rd alongside new label-mates, The Cansecos & Cadence Weapon and locals Silly Kissers and CFCF. January will see the anthem-in-waiting “Society”
single dropped on turntables the world over, helping each of us get through the bleak winter months with that chunky slice of emphatic energy-induced music we oh-so-crave at the beginning of each new year. 2010 will be packed full of live dates, festivals, mixes and remixes, but best of all, their brand new LP will burst onto the scene in the early summer months.

“Society”, the album will be released summer 2010 on their new abode Upper Class Recordings, the Toronto-based label responsible for bringing you influential and notable artists The Russian Futurists, Cadence Weapon, Girlsareshort (MSTRKRFT Al-P’s original project) and The Cansecos.

Cadence Weapon is Edmonton's Next Poet Laureate
The UC Family sends congratulations to Mr. Roland Pemberton (or is it Sir Pemberton now?) aka Cadence Weapon, who today was announced Edmonton, Alberta's next Poet Laureate. His Lordship kicks in July 1,2009 and he will reign as Laureate for 2 years. What does this mean you ask? Well, Historically, a Poet Laureate served as the official chronicler of state events and occasions. In ancient times, the Laureate was the central means for recording and communicating history. For the City of Edmonton, the role of a Poet Laureate is to reflect the life of a city through poetry, as an ambassador for the literary arts; the Laureate incorporates poetry into a range of official and informal city activities. The creation of this position confirms the city's support for the arts in general, and for the literary arts in particular. So, to sum it up, Cadence Weapon is now officially a government agent. The Cansecos tour with Shout Out Out Out Out, shortlisted for ISC Prize

Toronto electro-wizards The Cansecos spring out of studio seclusion to hit the road with Edmonton scissor kicking, all-rhythm homies, Shout Out Out Out Out, forming a double bill that will have Canada’s finest electro outfits locked in bass drenched battles on dance floors from London to Montreal. The usual dressed to impress enthusiasts are expected to hit the dance floor for the rapture of The Cansecos.

The Cansecos have earned praise from Pitchfork Media, Uncut Magazine and the NY Observer for their unique musical soundscapes and visionary production. On their sophomore release Juices! (Upper Class Recordings) they enlisted the help of Adam Nunn (Radiohead, Air) at Abbey Road Studios. The result was heavily textured sounds, layered in 70’s funk rock production that marked a departure from their debut. The Cansecos remain true and comfortingly familiar, but with an absolutely modern style all of their own.

In keeping with their visionary antics, The Cansecos initially released a full-length bootleg version of Juices! aptly entitled, Juiced! The disco mash-up project, remixed tracks from Juices! “Raised By Wolves”, “Fight Yellow”, “Seen The Sun Rise” were ambitiously blended with original disco jams of the 70’s. Juiced!, available only on the band’s website and circulated through live shows, peer portals, and blogs, caused more of a stir than most traditional releases of 2007. That led The Cansecos to release a 70-minute disco mix tape, Showers. Showers displayed the musical inspiration behind Juiced! and made the All Music Guide’s Top 10 Mixes of 2008 alongside Santigold, Diplo and Simian Mobile Disco. Both Juiced! and Showers are available as free downloads at

The buzz surrounding the back to back releases of Juiced!, Juices! and Showers had music heads celebrating the redefined concept of an album, as well as attracting attention from their music peers, which landed The Cansecos back in the studio for most of 2008 producing and remixing some of the finest artists of the electronic dance and indie scenes (The Russian Futurists, Sally Shapiro, Black Kids)

Once in a while The Cansecos step away from the keys and knobs in their lab, and assemble their four-piece lineup; “The Billionaire” and “Generous G” are writing/production duo Bill Halliday and Gareth Jones with rhythm aces “Princely P” Paul Prince (bass) and “Stealy” Dan McCormick (drums) to jump on stage and reveal their live prowess. Next month, The Cansecos are confirmed for one such rare outing to perform 5-dates with Shout Out Out Out Out and Smalltown DJs. The Cansecos will be jamming out music from their two studio albums, their disco mash up Juiced! and live versions of their famed remixes

This exciting tour announcement comes hot on the heels of the band’s newest accolade, for the most celebrated song-writing competition in the world, The International Songwriting Competition. The Cansecos “Raised By Wolves” (Juices! Upper Class Recordings), is short-listed in the top ten finalists for Best Electronic/Dance Song of 2008. Over 15,000 songs were considered by a secret judging panel, stacked with legends (last year’s judges included T-Pain, Robert Smith, Tom Waits, Black Francis, Weird Al Yankovic, Tiesto). The admiration bestowed on The Cansecos is a great honour and accomplishment
