The Russian Futurists, the long-running indie-pop project of Toronto musician Matthew Adam Hart, haven’t released any music since 2010’s “The Weight’s on the Wheels” That changes today. Because today, Hart is releasing a new EP/mixtape called “Reality Burger With A Side Of Life” as a free download. As he explains in a statement:
“I put out my last actual record in 2010 and never stopped making music, doing it for fun makes the music infinitely more satisfying. I have hundreds of unfinished songs and these are the ones that seemed to deserve my attention. I’ve always loved making sample-based music and this project is a snapshot of what I get up to on most nights with my sampler. I’ve always wanted the Russian Futurists to be the sound of me with too many drinks etc. in my system in my basement; the distillation of Eric B. & Rakim, the Alchemist, and the Cocteau Twins all hanging out around a bunch of dusty records.”
The EP is a 16 minute, seven track banger, plus a collaboration with fellow Toronto producer Swim Good Now. As promised, it’s The Russian Futurists as sampledelia, with Hart piling his usual exuberant hooks atop a patchwork of older soul, R&B, and pop songs. Chow down on that delicious Reality Burger With A Side Of Life
The Russian Futurists drops two never released remixes for Christmas; “Horseshoe Fortune” (Yourself Remix)… and the Futurists himself remixing one of our favorites from Cadence Weapon’s Hope In Dirt City… “Cheval”

Cadence Weapon is back with a new video for his hip hop anthem, “Hype Man,” up now on Exclaim! and Stereogum who describes the clip, “Cadence adapts the personas of both a star rapper and his hapless, nameless hypeman sidekick…illustrating a vast divide in the rap power dynamic.” Co-directed by Rollie himself and award-winning director George Vale, the video is a compelling and cinematic look at the seedier, darker side of hip-hop, exploring the plights and demise of a hype man.

Aussie garage duo DZ Deathrays get the Cadence Weapon remix treatment turning “Dollar Chills” into a beat-heavy track that blends minimal synths with heavily altered vocals. Sorta like those jive rhythm trax breakdancing records from the ‘80s crossed with nu shooz.
Cadence Weapon has stepped in to remix Liars “Brats” turning the track into a hip hop monster that even includes him dropping a verse above deep bass drops.
The remix is one of three that will be released on the upcoming “Brats” single, due out on 12″ and digital download October 16 from Mute.
The former touringmate of Liars will embark on the “Hope In Dirt City” tour this fall. Check out the dates here.

Cadence Weapon Hope In Dirt City honoured on the Polaris Music Prize Shortlist
The 2012 Polaris Short List was announced yesterday (July 17) at The Drake Hotel in Toronto, ON.
Polaris Founder and Executive Director Steve Jordan was pretty excited about the List.
“Our jury is showing an ever growing passion and dedication to reviewing, discussing and advocating their selections. This has resulted in a Short List of records that are musically focused, intense and in some cases highly personal. The process of selecting a winner should prove to be an invigorating challenge for our Grand Jury.”
The 200+ writers, editors, producers and media figures who make up the Polaris Music Prize jury pool chose the Short List by submitting ballots listing their Top 5 albums from the previously announced Long List of 40 eligible albums.
It’s on to the big show, the Polaris Gala, being held in Toronto on September 24, where a Grand Jury made up of 11 Polaris jurors will be sequestered Papal conclave-style until they decide which one of the 10 Short List albums will be declared the best Canadian album of 2012.
The full Gala event, including live performances from a number of the artists, will be webcast at MuchMusic.com. Additionally, a one-hour Gala highlight show will be broadcast on Much Sept. 29 at 10 p.m.
