Season’s Greetings from the UC Family

December 15, 2013

The Russian Futurists are set to release long awaited album, The Weight’s On The Wheels, this summer. The Weight’s On The Wheels is arguably The Russian Futurists most accomplished creation to date. The Russian Futurists return to the stage to make their first live appearance after a year in the studio in celebration of Wavelength 500! Wavelength is a weekly live music series based in Toronto. It was founded in late 1999 by a loose collective of frustrated yet hopeful independent musicians trying to breathe some life into some of the darker corners of Toronto’s perpetually overlooked indie music scene. Documenting local cultural history was their aim — as such, every Wavelength series show since the start has been numbered. Wavelength has helped launch the career trajectories of now-internationally renowned Torontonian and Canadian artists like The Russian Futurists, Holy Fuck, Cadence WeaponThe Cansecos, Broken Social Scene, The Constantines, Final Fantasy, The Hidden Cameras, Great Lake Swimmers, Tokyo Police Club, Peaches, Caribou, Junior Boys, Crystal Castles, Fucked Up and many others. TICKETS ON SALE TODAY, check back at GalleryAC.com

Toronto electro-wizards The Cansecos spring out of studio seclusion to hit the road with Edmonton scissor kicking, all-rhythm homies, Shout Out Out Out Out, forming a double bill that will have Canada’s finest electro outfits locked in bass drenched battles on dance floors from London to Montreal. The usual dressed to impress enthusiasts are expected to hit the dance floor for the rapture of The Cansecos.

The Cansecos have earned praise from Pitchfork MediaUncut Magazine and the NY Observer for their unique musical soundscapes and visionary production. On their sophomore release Juices! (Upper Class Recordings) they enlisted the help of Adam Nunn (RadioheadAir) at Abbey Road Studios. The result was heavily textured sounds, layered in 70’s funk rock production that marked a departure from their debut. The Cansecos remain true and comfortingly familiar, but with an absolutely modern style all of their own.

In keeping with their visionary antics, The Cansecos initially released a full-length bootleg version of Juices! aptly entitled, Juiced! The disco mash-up project, remixed tracks from Juices! “Raised By Wolves”, “Fight Yellow”, “Seen The Sun Rise” were ambitiously blended with original disco jams of the 70’s. Juiced!, available only on the band’s website and circulated through live shows, peer portals, and blogs, caused more of a stir than most traditional releases of 2007. That led The Cansecos to release a 70-minute disco mix tape, Showers. Showers displayed the musical inspiration behind Juiced! and made the All Music Guide’s Top 10 Mixes of 2008 alongside SantigoldDiplo and Simian Mobile Disco. Both Juiced! and Showers are available as free downloads at www.thecansecos.com

The buzz surrounding the back to back releases of Juiced!Juices! and Showers had music heads celebrating the redefined concept of an album, as well as attracting attention from their music peers, which landed The Cansecos back in the studio for most of 2008 producing and remixing some of the finest artists of the electronic dance and indie scenes (The Russian FuturistsSally ShapiroBlack Kids)

Once in a while The Cansecos step away from the keys and knobs in their lab, and assemble their four-piece lineup; “The Billionaire” and “Generous G” are writing/production duo Bill Halliday and Gareth Jones with rhythm aces “Princely P” Paul Prince (bass) and “Stealy” Dan McCormick (drums) to jump on stage and reveal their live prowess. Next month, The Cansecos are confirmed for one such rare outing to perform 5-dates with Shout Out Out Out Out and Smalltown DJs. The Cansecos will be jamming out music from their two studio albums, their disco mash up Juiced! and live versions of their famed remixes

This exciting tour announcement comes hot on the heels of the band’s newest accolade, for the most celebrated song-writing competition in the world, The International Songwriting Competition. The Cansecos “Raised By Wolves” (Juices! Upper Class Recordings), is short-listed in the top ten finalists for Best Electronic/Dance Song of 2008. Over 15,000 songs were considered by a secret judging panel, stacked with legends (last year’s judges included T-PainRobert SmithTom WaitsBlack FrancisWeird Al YankovicTiesto). February 2, 2008

November 20 was the Canadian release date of “JUICES!” the long awaited new album by The Cansecos.

Juices!

Available now at fine Canadian retailers, iTunes and Zunior.com. Look for this album to be released in the USA, UK and beyond in 2008. Here are some early reactions: “a stylish successor that refines the thrift shop pop of their debut. It’s an understatement to say they’ve developed their sound — the synths now glide like silk and their attention to detail for the finer points in production, be it intricate percussion (see “Lunar Landing”) or layering their library of synths, shows they’ve become compulsive producers. As evidenced on their first album, they also know how to write a pop hook, which is publicised instantly with the swelling Balearic harmonies in “Seen the Sun Rise” and the electro slide of obvious single “Raised By Wolves.” Where Juices! prospers most though is in its shameless ambition to both hang loose and chillax, which it essentially implements in “Rise Up,” the most blasé call for action you’ll ever hear. Juices! tastes great and is less filling.” – Exclaim! “While The Cansecos might delve into an oh-so-familiar “I made this on my laptop while the world slept” aesthetic, the now-a-quartet succeed where so many others fail. Tracks sound familiar but not comfortable, assured but blindly ambitious. They’re constantly keeping you on your toes with myriad-layered beats and vocals that are ethereally robotic. Their production is clean and the arrangements unfold in a meticulously measured chaos. “Rise Up” opens demurely and quickly elevates to the level of a slow motion dance party with a hip-shake worthy beat. It all works to the point where The Cansecos have set themselves apart from their peers, and have done it in irreverent style” – Chart “Juices! is an admittedly dancey album. The group mixes it up with funky synth beats and vocoder-like vocals. The album’s title track is a minute-long musical spritzfest that gives the album an odd opening and makes the listener very curious about what to expect. “Raised By Wolves” starts off with a funky guitar riff and a poppy, upbeat-emphasizing groove. By contrast, “Fight Yellow” is a fast-paced keyboard-driven track that floats in and out of dissonant chords. This song bleeds into the track “Fog, Smoke, Steam” that rides on an ’80s-inspired synth horn background and laid-back bass line with haunting vocals that talk about dreams and secrets.” – The Gauntlet “Juices! is packed to the brim with shimmering dance-pop (think of The Postal Service on ecstasy)” – Ottawa Xpress And also, come see The Cansecos play Lee’s Palace on Friday, December 21!

CADENCE WEAPON & FINAL FANTASY
TOURING THE USA TOGETHER! THE “HE POOS WEAPONS TOUR”? This unexpected pairing started when, in 2006, fellow Canadians – Owen Pallett, aka Final Fantasy and Rollie Pemberton, aka Cadence Weapon, were nominated for the inaugural Polaris Music Prize. They then shared the cover of Toronto’s weekly, Eye Magazine, in a fist fight, so, naturally when the two young musicians were approached by Canadian national radio show CBC “Fuse”back in April of this year to share the stage for a six-song collaboration, Owen & Rollie jumped at the chance to work together. Like a successful and deranged vaudeville show, their inverse personalities and polar ways of rocking crowds have brought them together, and so it is… Cadence Weapon and Final Fantasy have decided to co-headline a tour of the United States this fall. Cadence Weapon’s punishing electronic party rap live show will be a stark contrast to the emotional solo violin looping extravaganza that Final Fantasy puts on, making for one of the most interesting co-bills in recent indie history. Both artists will play favourites from their past acclaimed releases “Breaking Kayfabe” and “He Poos Clouds”. Cadence Weapon will be showcasing new material from his highly anticipated sophomore release, “Afterparty Babies” due early next year on Upper Class/EMI/Epitaph/Big Dada.

2-double-oh-7, what hast thou bringst ye?

We have a lot to talk about but we’re not going to get into here or now…it’s not the time for place for such rambling, but we will admit shame about something ::: we had a plan to hold out making an Upper Class MySpace page until 2010.  We caved.  What can we say man, people ask, people laugh, and they say “have you no friends?” – we even received a disturbingly provoking email from THE Tom himself, he was making jokes at us for not being on MySpace.  ARE YOU HAPPY WORLD?????  Here it is…okay? www.myspace.com/upperclassrecordings

There seriously is a lot of news to come soon about The Russian Futurists, Cadence Weapon, The Cansecos, and maybe we’ll even throw some new names at you before spring rolls around.  If you become our MySpace friends you’ll know even more about Upper Class’ 2007 plans, got it? Thanks for tuning in, keep ‘er real.

January 31, 2007

Happy Holidays from everyone at Upper Class.

We at Upper Class Recordings ask only a few things of you as 2006 comes to an exit…

2 – GET CRUNK WITH THE RUSSIAN FUTURISTS DECEMBER 28 @ THE DRAKE!  Their last live show…of 2006!

3 – VOTE AT THE CBC RADIO3 BUCKY AWARDS! Cadence Weapon is already nominated for some things but the good news is you can nominate anyone so you can still vote in Matt Hart of The Russian Futurists as sexiest male canadian or best facial hair! Also make sure you check out the Coke Machine Glow end of the year Podcast…among what will be a great collection of songs will be Cadence Weapon covering Chad Vangaalen…and you can tune into CBC Radio’s ‘Definitely Not The Opera’ soon to hear Cadence spreading Christmas cheer through his version of “We Three Kings” Keep an eye on the UC turntable in the top right there…i’m sure there are some UC Christmas upper classiks working their way in to the mix!

And one last thing…prepare yourself for 2007 – the year of Laser Rock…get ready for The Cansecos “Juices!”
