The Russian Futurists, the long-running indie-pop project of Toronto musician Matthew Adam Hart, haven’t released any music since 2010’s “The Weight’s on the Wheels” That changes today. Because today, Hart is releasing a new EP/mixtape called “Reality Burger With A Side Of Life” as a free download. As he explains in a statement:
“I put out my last actual record in 2010 and never stopped making music, doing it for fun makes the music infinitely more satisfying. I have hundreds of unfinished songs and these are the ones that seemed to deserve my attention. I’ve always loved making sample-based music and this project is a snapshot of what I get up to on most nights with my sampler. I’ve always wanted the Russian Futurists to be the sound of me with too many drinks etc. in my system in my basement; the distillation of Eric B. & Rakim, the Alchemist, and the Cocteau Twins all hanging out around a bunch of dusty records.”
The EP is a 16 minute, seven track banger, plus a collaboration with fellow Toronto producer Swim Good Now. As promised, it’s The Russian Futurists as sampledelia, with Hart piling his usual exuberant hooks atop a patchwork of older soul, R&B, and pop songs. Chow down on that delicious Reality Burger With A Side Of Life

The Russian Futurists, aka Matthew Adam Hart, and Heavy Blinkers crooner Ruth Minnikin trade verses in this sugary duet about hooking up. “One Night, One Kiss” is a playfully seductive clip shot by fashion photographer Angus Rowe MacPherson, set in our idealized memory of youth, playing with the song’s sense of aching wonder at the discovery of new love. A couple
meet while hanging out with mutual friends, they share a magical moment of hopeless romanticism at the party; their friends become nothing more than blurry, insignificant light and colour as the two lovebirds ditch the scene, set out on an all night journey through the early morning to her apartment, which they proceed to tear to shreds as they flirt their way through costumes, candy jars, lamps, tables, and anything else in their path keeping them from their ultimate moment of this one night, this one kiss.

Canada’s psychedelic pop star, The Russian Futurists, is back with a stunning new studio album – The Weight’s On The Wheels – due out tomorrow on Upper Class Recordings. The Toronto based artist aka Matthew Adam Hart produced the new album with the aid of Michael Musmanno (Outkast, Lilys, Arrested Development) and sonically takes his sound out of the bedroom and onto the airwaves. The Weight’s On The Wheels captures the Futurists in full pop regalia from start to finish.
The Russian Futurists released his debut album The Method of Modern Love on Upper Class nearly a decade ago and quickly caught the ear of musicians and critics alike earning Matthew Adam Hart comparisons to Magnetic Fields and Flaming Lips, raves from Pitchfork, SPIN, The Guardian and XLR8R and praise from established acts Blur, REM and Snow Patrol.
He followed up his debut with two more critically acclaimed releases – Let’s Get Ready to Crumble (Upper Class 2002) and Our Thickness (Upper Class 2005) and in 2007, Me Myself and Rye – a collection of The Futurists’ hottest songs – was released. The compilation took off and The Russian Futurists found himself touring with Peter, Bjorn & John, Caribou and Junior Boys among others. Thanks to Hart’s knack for producing catchy dreamy pop music and continued critical acclaim, he found himself remixing Sloan, Lo-Fi Fnk, Stars, Shout Out Louds, Sally Shapiro, Dykehouse and labelmates Cadence Weapon.
Now it’s 2010 and The Russian Futurists is back with The Weight’s On The Wheels – a monster pop record. The first song on the album, “Hoeing Weeds Sowing Seeds” – mixed by Grammy Award Winner Michael Brauer (Coldplay, John Mayer, The Bravery) – is a celebration explosion, a thumping and glorious beat with classic Matthew Hart triumphant vocals rising atop the electronic paradise; the track is available as a free download at www.russianfuturists.com.
Catch the band on tour, and be there to welcome them home at their Toronto Release Party December 2nd at Wrong Bar with special guests DVAS.
